Basic statistical tests - standard deviation
Definition
- Standard deviation quantifies the spread/variability of individual data points around the mean in a normally distributed dataset - a larger standard deviation indicates greater variability between individual observations, while a smaller standard deviation indicates observations clustered more tightly around the mean
- Reported alongside the mean as standard practice for summarising normally distributed continuous data in clinical research
