- Cellulitis - infection of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, poorly demarcated, spreading
- Erysipelas - more superficial, sharply demarcated, raised border - classically streptococcal
- Spectrum extends to impetigo (superficial, epidermal) and necrotising fasciitis (deep fascial, surgical emergency) - depth of tissue involvement is the organising axis
