Pituitary function testing
Scope
- Comprehensive pituitary function testing assesses each anterior pituitary hormone axis (thyroid, adrenal, gonadal, growth hormone, prolactin) individually, since pituitary disease can affect one, several, or all axes to differing degrees - a "panel" approach testing all axes is generally needed rather than assuming uniform involvement
- Performed whenever pituitary pathology (mass lesion, or clinical suspicion of hormone excess/deficiency) is identified or suspected, given the need to characterise the full functional impact across all pituitary-dependent hormone axes
