Epidemiology of disease – concepts used in describing the disease effects on a population - attack rate

Definition

  • Attack rate is the proportion of an exposed population that develops disease over a specified (often short) period, most commonly used in outbreak investigation to describe the cumulative incidence within a defined exposure event (e.g. a foodborne illness outbreak at a single event)
  • A key measure in outbreak epidemiology, used to quantify the proportion affected among those exposed and to compare attack rates between different exposure subgroups (e.g. those who ate a specific food item versus those who did not) to help identify the outbreak source
