Principles of immunisation in the immunocompromised host
Overview
- Immunisation in immunocompromised patients follows the general principle that live vaccines are contraindicated in significant immunosuppression (risk of vaccine-strain disease) while inactivated/non-live vaccines remain indicated and are often given more intensively (additional doses, closer monitoring of response) given reduced but still meaningful vaccine-induced protection
- An increasingly important area given the growing population on immunosuppressive/biologic therapy, transplant recipients, and those with HIV or other immunodeficiencies
