Role
- Faecal microscopy examines stool directly for white cells, red cells, ova, cysts, and parasites - a rapid, relatively low-cost initial test in the workup of diarrhoea, particularly when a parasitic cause is suspected
- Particularly relevant in returning travellers, immunocompromised patients, and persistent/chronic diarrhoea where a parasitic cause is more likely than in typical short-duration community-acquired diarrhoea
