MRI in endocrinology
Role
- MRI is the preferred imaging modality for the pituitary gland (superior soft tissue contrast for detecting micro/macroadenomas) and is used as a problem-solving modality for adrenal and other endocrine imaging when CT characterisation is indeterminate, given its lack of ionising radiation and superior soft tissue discrimination
- The standard first-line imaging investigation whenever a pituitary lesion is suspected biochemically (e.g. in the work-up of acromegaly, Cushing disease, hypopituitarism, or hyperprolactinaemia), given substantially better sensitivity for small pituitary lesions than CT
