- MRI and PET (typically PET-CT) provide complementary information in cancer imaging - MRI for superior soft-tissue anatomical detail in specific sites, PET for whole-body functional/metabolic assessment
- Used selectively where they add information beyond standard CT - MRI for sites where CT has limited soft-tissue contrast (brain, spine, pelvis, liver), PET where metabolic activity better characterises disease extent than anatomy alone
