Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) procedures
What it is
- An ultrasound probe incorporated into a bronchoscope - allows real-time imaging of structures adjacent to the airway (mediastinal/hilar lymph nodes, central masses) and guided needle sampling (EBUS-TBNA)
- Has substantially reduced the need for surgical mediastinoscopy in lung cancer staging - a less invasive, day-case procedure with comparable diagnostic yield for accessible nodal stations
