Red flags
- Hot, swollen single joint with fever - septic arthritis until excluded, needs urgent aspiration
- Calf swelling + pain + risk factors - DVT until excluded
- Compartment syndrome features (pain out of proportion, pain on passive stretch, paraesthesia) - surgical emergency
- Rapidly spreading erythema/swelling with systemic toxicity - necrotising fasciitis
- Swelling + neurovascular compromise distally
